Mt. Chase, Maine, incorporated in 1864; was reorganized as a plantation in 1936 and then re-incorporated as a town in 1979. The town of Mt. Chase is named for the mountain peak and was first settled in 1838, in 1862 it was organized as Mt. Chase Plantation and was incorporated as a town in 1864. The land surrounds Katahdin and is believed to have been used by the Penobscots and Maliseets Tribes for hundreds of years. Mt. Chase, the mountain is 2,440 feet and
is located on the eastern side of town. It is of volcanic origin and is part of four peaks in the region – the other three include Davis at 1,920 feet, Long at 1,720 feet and Bald a tad shorter at 1,700 feet. Mt. Chase is home to Shin Pond (which is com-prised of Upper and Lower Shin Ponds) and Shin Pond Village. Shin Pond Village is home to Shin Pond House established in 1870s by Charles Sibley and was the town’s first hotel. Mt. Chase Lodge was established in 1960 on Upper Shin Pond.

Industries include logging, tourism, sporting camps, guide services, snowmobiling and ATVing. ATVing and snowmobiling are thriving industries that have helped this area become a four-season destination. With hundreds of miles of trail systems, you can travel from Millinocket to Caribou.
