"Such a beautiful area! Snomobiled from Stacyville in to Baxter including Shin Pond. I'll be back really soon.

Everybody was sooo nice up there too. Can't wait to go back."

-Dave P.

"We spend a week each summer in the park camping and thought it was time to do a snowmobiling trip. If there is a god's country you guys have it."

-Mike

Sponsor a picnic table at Jerry Pond

by Shelley Farrington, Lincoln News

MILLINOCKET – In addition to using 80 percent of the profits from it’s annual dinner and auction for Jerry Pond restoration efforts, the Katahdin Area Rotary Club is also fundraising in other ways.

One of those ways is through buying a $200 kit for an eight foot picnic table and $1,000 for a kit that includes the table, metal roof covering, a cook grill (a barbeque on a pedestal) and trash barrel. With both kits the purchasing person or organization can personalize the gift with a sign bearing their name or name the name of their organization.

Memorial and honor gifts are also welcomed.

According to organizer and Rotarian Alan Pangburn the kits are being prepared by inmates at the Charleston Correctional Facility and will be assembled locally. There will only be 20 kits sold and they will all be dispersed throughout the newly renovated Jerry Pond area.

Many families have fond memories about their time at Jerry Pond and the picnic table kits offer them a chance to donate to the renovation project and see a tangible improvement and something people can use.

Anyone interested in purchasing a kit should contact any Rotarian or Pangburn directly at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 723-5077.

A brief history of Jerry Pond

from Shelley Farrington, Lincoln News

by Avern Danforth, past president of the Katahdin Area Rotary Club, 2007-07; and Kiwanis Club of Katahdin, 1969

MILLINOCKET – The Kiwanis Club of Katahdin was charted on April 16, 1958. Bob Crossley was general chairman of the Charter night and Andy Humes was the first president.

One of the very first projects of the new service club was the Jerry Pond Road and Recreation Area. On June 1, 1959 a lease for recreation purposes was granted to the Millinocket Recreation Commission by Great Northern Paper Co. for the Kiwanis project.

The lease was “made to confer upon the lessees the right to cut a right-of-way and construct and maintain a road from the easterly end of New Jersey Street to Jerry Pond; also to construct parking areas near the shore of Jerry Pond; build proper cement, block, brick or stone fireplaces in the vicinity of the parking lots and improve the shore of the pond by creating a sand beach.”
